Short answer
Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player, third-person open-world crime game releasing November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. You explore the state of Leonida freely, play story missions as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and can ignore the plot to drive around whenever you like. No prior GTA experience is required.
The basics, one idea at a time
What Grand Theft Auto actually is
It is a crime drama played in a large city and countryside you can move through freely. You control one character at a time from a camera behind them, walking, driving and taking part in story missions. Between missions you can ignore the plot entirely and just explore.
Open world, in one sentence
Instead of choosing levels from a menu, you physically travel to the next thing you want to do. The world keeps running around you: traffic, pedestrians, weather and radio stations.
Missions
Missions are structured tasks — drive somewhere, follow someone, survive a shootout — usually started by going to a marker on the map. If you fail, the game restarts you at a checkpoint rather than at the beginning.
Free roam
Playing without a mission active. This is where most people spend their first hours: driving around, finding views, testing vehicles, learning the streets.
Story mode vs online — conceptually
Story mode is the single-player campaign: your own save, your own world, no other real players. An online mode is a separate shared world with other people. GTA VI is a single-player experience at launch according to Rockstar's current materials, and no online mode has been announced.
Wanted level
Commit a crime where police can see you and they start chasing you. The more serious the crime, the harder the response. Break line of sight, leave the area they are searching, and the chase eventually ends. This is series convention — GTA VI's exact system has not been detailed.
Driving
Cars differ enormously: a sports car grips and accelerates, a truck rolls and understeers. Hold the accelerator trigger, ease off before corners, and use the handbrake for sharp turns. Expect to crash a lot at first; that is normal and rarely punished.
Weapons and combat
You select weapons from a wheel, aim with one trigger and fire with the other. Take cover behind solid objects. Health drops when you take damage; armor absorbs damage first. Aim assist on controllers does a lot of work for you.
Money
Missions pay out, and the world offers other ways to earn. Money buys weapons, vehicles, clothing and upgrades. GTA VI's specific economy has not been detailed by Rockstar.
Saving
Modern entries autosave after missions and at checkpoints, and let you save manually — historically by resting at a safehouse or from a menu. Save manually before doing anything reckless if you care about your progress.
The minimap
The small map in the corner shows your position, the streets around you, your route and nearby markers. Set a waypoint on the full map and the minimap draws a line to follow. Learning to glance at it while driving is the single biggest early skill.
Safe, comfortable exploring
Nothing in a single-player game is permanent: you can drive anywhere, get arrested, fail, and continue. If chaos stresses you out, drive slowly, use taxis, and stick to the story markers until the world feels familiar.
Console basics
You need a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Digital copies can be pre-loaded from November 12, 2026 so they are installed before launch; physical copies still install data from disc. Rockstar has not published install size or graphics-mode details.
